Over 10 Million Scammed On Facebook

Spammers have invited over 10 million Facebook users to fake events in yet another attempt to generate income from online survey scams according to a report by the IT security and data protection firm Sophos. Even as we file this report, the scam is in progress and several thousand unwitting Facebook users are falling prey to it.

One of the event known as "Who blocked you from his friend list?" has already tricked over 165,000 people into signing-up, with an astounding 10.3 million users still deciding whether or not to respond. Scammers embed instructions into the 'More info' section of the event's summary and this convinces Facebook users to unwittingly visit the webpages for online surveys or competitions, which are a source of revenue for the scammers by means of commission. Sometimes, users are asked to provide a mobile phone number, and if the user is naive enough to provide it, he/she will most probably end up getting signed up for an expensive premium rate service.

Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos, Graham Cluley said, "These spammed-out event invitations and links to survey scams are one of the biggest nuisances on Facebook right now, impacting millions of users every day. It would be great if Facebook was being more proactive in shutting down these obviously bogus events, as currently it's far too easy for the scammers to fill their pockets through schemes like this."

In case you are affected by this scam, then you must cancel your reservation for the event. You must also notify your friends that you have shared a bogus link with them and/or invited them to a fake event. In case you have submitted your mobile phone number, you must contact your mobile service provider and inform them to keep any bogus charges from appearing in your mobile account.

The moral of the story is that Facebook users must beware of such suspicious events and think twice before accepting invitations from an unknown source.

FIR Against Facebook for Insulting Hindu Gods

 
It seems filing frivolous FIRs against Facebook is the favourite pastime of the people of Uttar Pradesh. Not long after the last FIR from Lucknow against Facebook for an anti-Gandhi group, comes another one aimed at the social networking website; this time for "instigating communal passions" and denigrating Indian gods.

"EVERY HINDU MUST SHARE THIS POST ON HIS/HER PROFILE"

An FIR was filed in Meerut against the social networking website by a social activist alleging that a Facebook profile lampoons Indian gods with an image

of the deities titled ''3 idiots'. Apparently, the profile is one amongst a spate of profiles poking fun at Islam and Hinduism as a part of ongoing online war between the proponents of the religions.

The FIR cites section 66 A of the Information Technology Act 2000, and expresses fears about the profile causing riots all over India. The creator of the profile has reportedly said that the profile will not be taken down unless similar profiles parodying Islam are taken down. Well, it looks like we have a Mexican standoff between religious fanboys over here. Even if this does lead to rioting, this won't be the first time Facebook has achieved the feat.

 

The very anonymity and freedom of speech provided by the Internet makes such pages inevitable. It's therefore wiser not to feed the trolls, instead of taxing our already strained resources on wild goose chases.  Facebook too isn't too eager to please our conservative Indian sensibilities, especially because the western civilisation is rooted deeply in their respect for freedom of speech; even when it comes to lampooning religion.

Facebook gets Updated for Android Application

 
The official Facebook for Android application has got a nice update that will let you upload photos on your friends' walls. The new Facebook for Android update v1.5.2 will let the users add photos to groups directly from their phone. A number of bug fixes have been bundled and the app gets SSL layer security too. 

The new update will bring the security layers to the app that was added to the Facebook web interface in late January. The update will now show you a camera icon when you visit your friend's wall or group that you're part of. Tap on the camera icon to upload the photo right from your Android phone and the photos get uploaded in perfect orientation.  

 

The changes brought by the Facebook for Android v1.5.2 update are:

• Added the ability to upload photos to friend's Walls
• Upload photos to Groups
• Photos will always upload with the correct orientation
• Improvements to landscape mode
• Improved security using SSL
• Various bug fixes

To Celebrate The Jan25 Revolution, Egyptian Names His Firstborn “Facebook”

Cultural relativity is an amazing thing. While American parents worry about their kids being on Facebook, Egyptian parents are naming their kids “Facebook” to commemorate the events surrounding the #Jan25 revolution.

According to Al-Ahram (one of the most popular newspapers in Egypt) a man in his twenties has named his first born daughter “Facebook” in tribute to the role the social media service played in organizing the protests in Tahrir Square and beyond.

Happy Birthday Facebook

From founder Mark Zuckerberg’s dorm room at Harvard to movie theaters across the US to the cover of TIME magazine to the fingertips of protestors in Cairo, Facebook has probably had more influence over our day to day lives than any other startup this decade.

 To celebrate its seven years of incredible growth, the company has put up a custom candle graphic up on its Facebook wall, with the message, “To the 1.5 million of you who share our birthday today – Happy Birthday!” The image has received over 8,000 comments and 48,558 ”Likes” thus far.

According to reports the company is nearing a 600 million user milestone, and that “1.5 million of you who share …” statement is conspicuously an order of magnitude less than if applied to the total world population (6.9 billion), so it must somehow relate to the Facebook population itself. If you assume that birthdays are evenly distributed, the 1.5 million number times the 365 days in a year would mean that Facebook has around 548 million users. But birthdays are not evenly distributed, and February tends to be a below average month in terms of birth distribution.

Of course 548 million is an underestimate, as it’s also possible that the 1.5 million here is just the number of users who have chosen to specify the specific February 4th birthday to Facebook, and the unspecifieds don’t get counted. I’ve emailed almost everyone at Facebook trying to get the actual methodology and received this response …

“As we turn seven, we’d like to thank everyone who uses Facebook in unique ways around the world, ways in which we never could’ve imagined, and for continuing to inspire us to provide a service that makes it easy for people to connect with the things and people they care about. We also wish the more than 1.5 million people who share our birthday, February 4, a very happy birthday.”

Guess we’ll have to wait until someone fesses up. In the meantime: Most recently the company was in the spotlight for plans to make Facebook Credits the primary form of in-game currency by July and also for being a tool facilitating communication between anti-Mubarak protestors in Egypt. Facebook is valued at over $50 billion dollars, or priceless.

Facebook Adds HTTPS Protocol Security Across Site

 

Popular social network Facebook has followed the footsteps of Google and Microsoft to implement HTTPS protocol as a security option. Facebook has also announced that it will add a layer of security with social authentication that involves friends' image identification to access account in case of any suspicious activity. Apart from making your access secure, ensure that you know everyone whom you've added as a friend else your Facebook account will be in trouble.

           

With Facebook being a craze among millions of people worldwide, it's also a sweet honey-pot for several hackers to launch phishing attacks, worms and social engineering methods to steal account information. But now, Facebook has announced that it will introduce new HTTPS connection for encrypted and secured access of the social network.

To access Facebook entirely over HTTPS connection, you need to enable the option in Account Security located in your Facebook Account Settings. At this moment, the option is opt-in because several other applications for Facebook are yet to support the HTTPS protocol.


While the rest of the applications get HTTPS protocol support, it's quite possible that hackers will try their best to steal your password. However, Facebook claims to have devised a solution that will restrain such hackers from accessing your account. With a new option called Social Authentication, Facebook asks users to identify his/her Facebook friends from the photos. That will usually happen if your Facebook account has been accessed from a totally different location. It might be a little annoying initially but it is for your own good.

However, in this case if the hacker is victim's friend or friend of friend then he/she can easily gain access to the Facebook account. That goes with a premise that the hacker knows/identifies victim's Facebook friends correctly.

             

Google had made the HTTPS protocol default on January 12, 2010. Post that, a majority of Gmail users were happy to access the email services via a secured protocol. However, in late October 2010, a simple Firefox Extention - FireSheep was demonstrated to snoop around the Wi-Fi for stealing Twitter, Facebook and even Hotmail account credentials. Following that, Microsoft added more security to its email Service Hotmail with new HTTPS protocol via SSL. Now Facebook has taken up the HTTPS secured protocol route to ensure user's account security.

Facebook Struggling With Voice Calling

If you aren't already sick of seeing Facebook in the news, here's another one. Recent activity suggests Facebook is playing around with voice calling. At the end of last year, Facebook and Skype announced a partnership where your Facebook contacts could be integrated into your Skype call list, but we haven't seen any function of Skype integrated into Facebook. However, recently, as one image shows, Facebook added the option of 'call friend' in its chat section.
This option quickly disappeared but the little amount of time it was available was enough to fuel countless rumours.

Facebook chat hasn't proved to be popular by any means and Facebook's latest "messages, not email" announcement shows that Facebook wants to be the place you communicate everything from. However, when asked to comment,a  Facebook spokesperson made an unexciting statement, saying "We don't comment on rumor and speculation and have nothing to announce at this time."

Mobile numbers, addresses on Facebook "a security risk"

Sydney, Jan 17 (ANI): A security expert has warned that users should remove their home addresses and phone numbers from their Facebook accounts.

Graham Cluley said the website now gives third parties access to that information.

The website said in a blog post at the weekend that it would give developers of applications access to the contact information of users who install their apps.

"These permissions must be explicitly granted to your application by the user via our standard permissions dialogs. Please note that these permissions only provide access to a user's address and mobile phone number, not their friend's addresses or mobile phone numbers," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Facebook's Jeff Bowen as saying.

However, Sophos security expert Cluley, has raised doubts over the move.

"You have to ask yourself - is Facebook putting the safety of its 500+ million users as a top priority with this move?" he said.

"It won't take long for scammers to take advantage of this new facility, to use for their own criminal ends."

Cluley advised that users should take personal info such as home addresses and mobile numbers off their pages.

"You can imagine, for instance, that bad guys could set up a rogue app that collects mobile phone numbers and then uses that information for the purposes of SMS spamming or sells on the data to cold-calling companies," he said. (ANI)
